Mental Review – Nolimit City’s Most Controversial (and Rewarding) Slot

This Game Is Not for Everyone. Nolimit City Knows That.

Let’s address the obvious. Mental is set in a mental hospital. The imagery is dark, disturbing, deliberately provocative. Nolimit City has built their brand on pushing boundaries, and this might be where they pushed hardest. Some find it offensive. Others find it fascinating. The gameplay underneath is undeniably exceptional.

Starts as 5×3, expands to 5×6 via xWays. 96.08% RTP, extreme volatility, 66,666x max win. That number isn’t an accident. Nothing in this game is.

xWays, xSplit, and Fire in the Hole

Nolimit City packed this with interacting mechanics. xWays expand reels by revealing 2-4 symbols per position. xSplit doubles adjacent symbols. And the Fire in the Hole feature… actually, it works differently than you’d expect from other Nolimit titles. Here it creates chain reactions unlocking higher multiplier tiers.

These layer on each other. xWays expanding a reel, xSplit doubling a wild, a cascade triggering more splits. When everything aligns, the screen transforms into something almost incomprehensible. In a good way.

Bonus Rounds (Three Tiers)

Multiple bonus tiers, each escalating potential and risk. The highest is where 66,666x lives. Getting there organically takes hundreds of spins. Or buy in at various price points, essentially strapping yourself to a roller coaster blindfolded.

I won’t sugarcoat it: bonus rounds can return less than buy-in cost. Regularly. You’ll have rounds paying 5x and others paying 5,000x. The variance is punishing.

The Theme Question

Is it too much? Maybe. The asylum setting, patient characters, unsettling sound design. It’s not gratuitous for its own sake, there’s a deliberate artistic vision. But I understand why some skip it entirely. Nolimit has other excellent options (Tombstone, San Quentin) with less provocative themes.

Our Take

Strip away the controversy and Mental is one of Nolimit City’s mechanical masterpieces. xWays, xSplit, and cascading features create depth most slots can’t touch. The 66,666x is legitimate, 96.08% RTP is acceptable. But extreme volatility demands respect, and the theme demands tolerance. For experienced players who know what they’re getting into, it’s outstanding. If not, plenty of other games exist. No judgment.
