Where Other Studios Won’t Go
Nolimit City makes slots about prison riots, mental asylums, and serial killers. Read that sentence again. In an industry dominated by Egyptian gods and fruit symbols, this Malta-and-Stockholm-based studio decided the way to stand out was to go where absolutely nobody else would. And it worked.
Founded in 2014, Nolimit City spent years as a niche curiosity before exploding into mainstream popularity around 2020-2021. San Quentin xWays dropped, streamers lost their minds over the 150,000x max win, and suddenly everyone knew who Nolimit City was. Evolution Gaming noticed too, acquiring the studio in 2022 for an undisclosed (but presumably enormous) sum.
The acquisition raised eyebrows. Would corporate ownership sand down the edges? So far, the answer is no. Nolimit is still Nolimit.
Mechanics Nobody Else Has
Let’s talk about xWays and xSplit, because these are genuinely innovative. xWays symbols land and reveal a random number of matching symbols, dynamically expanding the ways-to-win. xSplit doubles or triples symbols they land next to. Combined, they can turn a standard 243-ways game into a slot with tens of thousands of active paylines during a single spin. It’s mechanical chaos in the best possible sense.
San Quentin is the poster child: a prison-themed slot where the bonus round can award up to 150,000x your stake. One hundred and fifty thousand times. Nolimit would probably argue that adult entertainment should be allowed to be edgy. It’s a debate worth having, but it’s hard to deny the games themselves are brilliantly designed.

Our Take
Nolimit City is the studio that proved “different” can be a viable business strategy. While everyone else was making another Egyptian slot, they went to prison. Literally. And players rewarded them for it with massive adoption and genuine cult following.
The criticisms are valid. The themes can feel exploitative, the volatility is punishing even by high-vol standards, and the max wins are so astronomical that they create unrealistic expectations. Most players will never see anything close to 150,000x. The base games can grind you down relentlessly before (and if) a bonus triggers.
But if you appreciate slot design as a craft, Nolimit City is doing some of the most interesting work in the industry. The xWays and xSplit mechanics are genuinely original, the presentation is always top-tier, and every new release feels like it’s trying to push the format somewhere it hasn’t been. In an industry full of safe bets, Nolimit City is the studio that bets on itself. And so far, it’s paying off.
